What Is Digimon Story: Time Stranger?

Time Stranger is the latest entry in the Digimon Story JRPG series, following the beloved Cyber Sleuth duology. You play as a new protagonist navigating a world where temporal distortions are causing Digimon from different eras to collide — creating an unstable Digital World full of unexpected partner and enemy combinations.

The game features over 200 Digimon to partner with, a new Time Fracture battle mechanic that allows temporal abilities in combat, and a significantly expanded post-game compared to earlier entries in the series.

Switch 2 vs Other Versions

The Switch 2 version of Time Stranger is the headline release for handheld players. Specifically:

• Performance Mode: 1080p at 60fps — smooth and responsive, the recommended mode for most players
• Quality Mode: 4K at 30fps — stunning visuals when docked, particularly for Digimon evolution sequences
• Load times: Near-instant on Switch 2 vs. 8–12 second loads on base Switch
• Handheld mode: 720p at 60fps, excellent battery performance

If you have a Switch 2, this is the definitive portable version. Base Switch owners can still enjoy the game but will notice the performance difference in busier areas and evolution sequences.

TCG Connection — Digimon in the Game vs the Card Game

Several Digimon featured prominently in Time Stranger also appear in the current TCG format — particularly in BT-25 and the upcoming BT-26 EN set (September 4, 2026). If you find a partner Digimon in the game that you love, there’s a good chance a competitive version of that Digimon exists in the card game right now.

Notable crossovers between Time Stranger and current TCG format include several Ultimate and Mega-level Digimon that anchor current BT-25 competitive decks. It’s a good entry point into the card game if the video game sparked your interest.

DLC & What’s Coming

Bandai has confirmed a large-scale DLC expansion for 2027 — described as adding a substantial new story arc and additional Digimon beyond the base game’s 200+. No pricing or specific details have been announced yet.

The base game is complete and worth playing now. The 2027 DLC is a bonus to look forward to, not a reason to wait.
